Who was with Otis Redding when he died?

Before tragically passing away at the height of his fame, Otis Redding lived a short five years as a professional entertainer and blazed brightly and fiercely.

When it broke the heartbreaking news of the plane crash that claimed his life on December 10, 1967, Rolling Stone referred to him as “the Crown Prince of Soul.” And according to their Biography, he also went by the moniker “The King of Soul” due to his irresistible stage presence.

On stage, he was performing much more than just singing. He astonished listeners of all races in the northern and southern United States as well as in Europe by bridging the rigidly followed racial divisions created during the Jim Crow era.

Before his passing, he had performed at the Monterey Pop Festival, the renowned Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco, and on tours in France, Britain, and Scandinavia.

The Bar-Kays, a soul group from Memphis, Tennessee, who had performed with Redding on that tour for more than a hundred gigs, were all aboard the plane that crashed into a lake outside Madison, Wisconsin, that chilly December night, except one.

Only one band member, Ben Cauley, was able to escape the carnage alive. Along with Redding, four other people also passed away: Ronnie Caldwell, Carl Cunningham, Jimmy King, and Phalon Jones.
