Opinion | My life in Charles Osgoods orbit

I read the Jan. 24 obituary for Charles Osgood, “Wry and witty stalwart of CBS’s ‘Sunday Morning,’ ” with sadness and great interest. Justifiably beloved, the journalist and CBS were, quite literally, a part of my childhood. My late father, Norman S. Morris, was an award-winning senior producer for CBS News, radio and “Sunday Morning.” With so much airtime to cover, in addition to their own work, correspondents relied on a team of talented writers who could almost indistinguishably adapt to each reporter’s style. That was one of Dad’s many roles: from the 1960s, writing copy for the icons of CBS, including Harry Reasoner, Douglas Edwards, Walter Cronkite, Dan Rather and many others, particularly Charles Kuralt and Osgood. I took for granted that I knew many of them simply as people in my dad’s workplace or occasionally at family events.
